Who are the Dolphins?
The Sugarland Run Dolphins Swim Team was formed in 1975, for Sugarland Run swimmers interested in competing in a swim league. The Dolphins are sponsored by the Sugarland Run Homeowner's Asssociation (SRHOA), and are a members of the Colonial Swimming League in the Gold Division. In 2005 we took the title for our division – an honor we are working hard to regain!

The Sugarland Run Dolphins Swim Team is both a competitive and a developmental swim team. This allows beginning swimmers to gain meet (competition) experience, and more advanced swimmers to remain competitive. Our program is designed to help every swimmer to be successful in improving their competitive swimming skills.

Isn't the Dolphins swim team only for Sugarland Run residents?
The answer is simple: No, the Dolphins Swim Team has included members from outside our community since the mid 1990's. Towards the end of the 2006 season, the Sugarland Run Home Owners' Association became aware that the constitution under which the swim team was operating specifically limited membership to Sugarland Run residents. Therefore, it became necessary for the Sugarland Run members of the team to elect a Board according to the constitution that was in place. Upon election, the Board immediately proposed changes to the constitution, including extending membership to all of our neighboring communities. This constitution was ratified by the membership, and we were set to move ahead with the 2007 season with full membership open to all. Sugarland Run is one of the few - perhaps the only - neighborhood swim team that has an open membership policy, and it is our intention to continue in this tradition.

In what league do the Dolphins compete?
The Dolphins are part of the Colonial Swimming League. This league has four divisions, generally with six teams in each division. The league website is at http://csl.nvblu.com/plasma/core/site/csl

Do the Dolphins have a website?
Yes. The web address is http://dolphins.srhoa.com/

Who manages the team?
An Executive Board of parent volunteers makes policy decisions. Tammy Farmer is the team manager, and Tom Tilghman is the team representative to the league. The team currently has twocoaches, with Maggie Pruden being Head Coach.

How can I email the Executive Board?
The email address is Dolphins@srhoa.com  This address reaches all of the board members.  Or Individually:

What is the Relay Carnival?
The Relay Carnival is an event that involves the entire league. Any team in the league may send relay teams to compete; no individual events take place. Our team is hosting the Relay Carnival again this year. It requires an enormous amount of parent volunteers. We gain a lot of revenue for the team from concession and t-shirt sales.

How can I help out?
Grace Saldanha is our Volunteer Coordinator. She will disseminate information on volunteer assignments during the week of each meet. You can contact her using the following email address: nikisal2000@hotmail.com The team in is in desperate need of deck officials during meets. If you are able to help us out, please let Grace know. Deck official jobs require that you take an open book test. The tests are on the CSL webpage. If you need a copy contact Peter Plante.

Pool Rules and Regulations

In the interest of safety, insurance and maintaining a good relationship with the Sugarland Run Homeowners Association, the swim team Board has decided that the following pool rules and regulations will be enforced during swim team practice.

  • No dogs are permitted inside the fenced pool area or pool house.
  • Only coaches and registered swimmers may use the big pool.
  • No one may use the baby pool.

The Dolphins are guests of the SRHOA, there are no lifeguards on duty during practice and only registered Dolphin swimmers are insured. So, we feel it is imperative that these rules be followed exactly.

Performance

What should I do if I have a concern about my swimmer's performance?
Talk to the coaches AFTER a practice or meet. DO NOT monopolize a coach's time during a practice or meet to discuss your individual swimmer. The coaches are responsible for coaching many children at once and need to be allowed time and space to manage the team. Please stay off the deck near the pool as much as possible during practices.

What should I do if I have a concern about a coach's actions?
Talk to a board member, with your concerns or contact them at Dolphins@srhoa.com

Coach's Corner

Thanks to everyone who came out to the meet on the Fourth of July!

Not only did we win the meet, we had fun and several swimmers achieved personal best times!

This Wednesday we have a home meet, before the meet we will have a coach’s race. Maggie, Jackie, and Cat will race an event chosen by the swimmers! Swimmers can vote before or after practice on Tuesday.

This week’s swimmers of the week are Kyle P, Kaitlyn K, and Mikey M!

The winners of the Patriotic Dolphin contest on Saturday were Courtney, Reece, and Logan!

We have another hard team to race against this week, so we will be working hard during practice to get more personal best times!

Coach Maggie

What is the difference between Wednesday night meets and Saturday morning meets?
We compete in five dual (“A”) meets, each Saturday beginning June 21 through July 26 beginning at 8:00 am and ending at approximately 10:30. Three boys and three girls from each age group (8 and under, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-18) will be entered to swim each stroke. The coaching staff is responsible for choosing the swimmers, based on the fastest time and attendance. We welcome and encourage all team members, even those not scheduled to swim, to attend and cheer the team on.

All swimmers will swim on Wednesday (“B”) meets which begin at 6:00 pm. Ending times vary upon how large of a team we are competing against. Since everyone swims there may be several heats of each event. These meets do not contribute points towards our standing, but serve to establish times for the swimmers so that the coaches can place swimmers in the “A” meets.

How will I know if my swimmer has been selected for a Saturday meet?
Maggie will let your swimmer know, at the latest, Friday before the meet. (It takes a lot of time to figure out the logistics of each meet.)

So should I only bring my swimmer to a Saturday meet if he or she is selected to swim?
No! Please come anyway. The Coach often needs to make last-minute changes to the lineup of swimmers in case swimmers get sick or don't show up for other reasons. Bring your swimmer prepared to swim (with suit, goggles, etc.). Swimmers who don't get a chance to swim can cheer on their teammates.

How soon before a meet should my swimmer arrive?
The location of the meet determines the time the swimmers arrive at the pool. Saturday morning home meets the swimmers need to be at the pool at 6:50 am.

Where should my swimmer report when we arrive at a meet?
Tell your swimmer to see Maggie as soon as they arrive.

Who do I contact if my swimmer can't attend a meet?
Write in Maggie's spiral notebook if you know, in advance, that your swimmer will not be attending a particular meet. If on Saturday morning, you find your swimmer is unable to swim call Team Manager Tammy Farmer at 703-989-0695.

How will my swimmer know when it is time to line up for his or her next event?
During meets, the swimmers will stay with the team. Have them limit trips to the snack bar, etc. The coaches will call out the upcoming events. If the swimmers have any questions about their next event, they should contact one of the coaches.
